چکیده

We present a space and time allocation problem that arises in assembly halls producing large building blocks (namely, a shipyard which assembles prefabricated keel elements). The building blocks are very large, and, once a block is placed in the hall, it cannot be moved until all assembly operations on this block are complete. Each block must be processed during a predetermined time window. The objective is to maximize the number of building blocks produced in the hall. The problem is modeled as a 3-dimensional bin packing problem (3D-BPP) and is handled by a Guided Local Search heuristic initially developed for the 3D-BPP. Our computational experiments with this heuristic demonstrate that excellent results can be found within minutes on a workstation, and that the heuristic outperforms a standard constraint programming approach. We also describe some additional real-life constraints arising in the industrial application and show how these constraints can be conveniently integrated in the model. ∗HEC Management School, University of Liège, Boulevard du Rectorat 7 (B31), B-4000 Liège, Belgium, [email protected] †HEC Management School, University of Liège, Boulevard du Rectorat 7 (B31), B-4000 Liège, Belgium, [email protected] ‡HEC Management School, University of Liège, Boulevard du Rectorat 7 (B31), B-4000 Liège, Belgium, [email protected] §Naval Architecture and Transportation Systems (ANAST), University of Liège, Chemin des Chevreuils 1 (B52-3), B-4000 Liège, Belgium, [email protected]

The Comparison of Imperialist Competitive Algorithm Applied and Genetic Algorithm for Machining Allocation of Clutch Assembly (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The allocation of design tolerances between the components of a mechanical assembly and manufacturing tolerances can significantly affect the functionality of products and related production costs. This paper introduces Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) approach to solve the machining tolerance allocation of an overrunning clutch assembly.  The objective is to obtain optimum tolerances of...

Effects of Hall Current and Rotation in Modified Couple Stress Generalized Thermoelastic Half Space due to Ramp-Type Heating

The objective is to study the deformation in a homogeneous isotropic modified couple stress thermoelastic rotating medium in the presence of Hall current and magnetic field due to a ramp-type thermal source. The generalized theories of thermoelasticity developed by Lord Shulman (L-S, 1967) and Green Lindsay (G-L, 1972) are used to investigate the problem. Laplace and Fourier transform technique...

A novel bi-level stochastic programming model for supply chain network design with assembly line balancing under demand uncertainty

This paper investigates the integration of strategic and tactical decisions in the supply chain network design (SCND) considering assembly line balancing (ALB) under demand uncertainty. Due to the decentralized decisions, a novel bi-level stochastic programming (BLSP) model has been developed in which SCND problem has been considered in the upper-level model, while the lower-level model contain...

A Lean Manufacturing Roadmap for an Automotive Body Assembly Line within Axiomatic Design Framework

In this paper we are to present a practical application of Axiomatic Design (AD) methodology, as a roadmap to lean production, in redesigning a car body assembly line. Axiomatic Design theory provides a framework to simplify the whole problem. According to the AD principles, a hierarchical structure has been developed. The developed structure originated in lean manufacturing principles and exis...
